5 tips for sound insulation

Passing cars, lawnmowers, leaf blowers or noisy neighbors: Many people feel greatly disturbed by noise coming from outside their house or apartment. This doesn’t necessarily have to be the case, at least if you plan to build a new home. Adequate soundproofing measures can effectively prevent noise from both outside and inside the house. Below we give 5 useful tips for soundproofing in new buildings:

#1 ACOUSTIC PROTECTION THROUGH SOLID WALLS

5 tips for sound insulation

For good sound insulation in new buildings, thick and solid external and internal walls made of concrete, brick or high-density sand-lime stone are recommended. Because a heavy wall isolates sound better.

In the case of a terraced house or a semi-detached house, the partition walls of the house must be completely soundproofed, i.e. there are no through ceilings and, ideally, at least in houses without a basement, the floor panels are also separated. The joint between the houses must have a thickness of at least three cm and mineral wool insulation.

Keep in mind that interior walls made of dry construction, that is, a frame with studs covered with plasterboard, have lower sound insulation than solid interior walls.

#2 ACOUSTIC PROTECTION THROUGH INSULATION IN THE ROOF AREA

It’s not just manufacturers who need to protect themselves from aircraft noise who need to protect themselves from noise «from above.» In the roof area, the necessary thermal insulation measures can also be combined with sound insulation. Whether insulation between the rafters or separate insulation above the rafters. Not only do they effectively contribute to the thermal insulation of the building. They also reduce noise entering the building from above through the roof.

They also guarantee less sound transmission inside the house or apartment.

#3 ACOUSTIC PROTECTION FOR WINDOWS AND SHUTTERS

The weakest components for transmitting external noise into the house or apartment are windows and doors. However, modern windows and doors usually already offer good sound insulation. The rule applies: the thicker the window frame and glass, the better the sound insulation. At the same time, thicker triple-glazed windows, such as the standard ones from , also offer better thermal insulation. Only those who build directly on a busy road or in the immediate vicinity of a railway line should choose windows with a higher sound insulation class for their new construction.

But when it comes to doors and windows, it’s not just the material that counts. The installation method is equally important. If windows and doors are not fixed and installed correctly, the best acoustic insulation of window frames and glass is of little use. Furthermore, for complete acoustic insulation, the shutter boxes must also be well insulated from noise, so that they do not become a sort of soundboard and noises coming from outside can penetrate inside the house.

#4 IMPACT INSULATION OF FLOORS AND STAIRS

Floor soundproofing measures prevent floor coverings such as parquet or laminate from vibrating and thus transmitting sound waves from one room to the one below. This is achieved by means of a soundproofing panel which is placed under the floating screed and absorbs sound waves. There must be no connection to the surrounding walls, otherwise the sound would be transmitted there. This also applies to the installation of the floor coverings themselves.

The sound of the impact of the stairs is transmitted from the steps through the walls and ceilings throughout the house. The solution for effective sound insulation lies in a low-vibration staircase with insulation between the handrails and steps. The elastic mounting of all fixing points of the ladder in the wall and ceiling ensures additional sound insulation.

#5 SOUNDPROOFING OF PIPES

Water pipes often prove to be crucial acoustic bridges within a home. Kitchen or bathroom pipes are made to vibrate by the flow of water and the resulting sound is transmitted throughout the house. If the cables are not soundproofed using rubber mounted mounting ties before being permanently installed, you will hear any noise afterwards. Furthermore, for effective sound insulation, only covered pipes should be installed, as provided as standard in the building description.

All listed soundproofing measures should be taken into account in the design and construction phase of your new home. Once the house is built, it becomes difficult to compensate for sound insulation deficiencies. Then contact your nearest construction partner. As a competent specialist, he knows how to take into account all the necessary measures for effective sound insulation in a new building right from the start when planning and building your dream house.
