Design outdoor spaces correctly |

A beautiful garden with a sunny terrace completes the house construction project. Much of domestic life takes place there, especially in the summer period. With the right design of outdoor spaces you can transform any garden into a small paradise. Below we will show you the best way to do this:

TAKE THE OUTSIDE INTO CONSIDERATION WHEN DESIGNING YOUR HOME

Many builders put off designing the garden until after the move. It is best to design outdoor spaces together with the design of the house. In this way the house and garden can form a harmonious unit. Furthermore, building law even requires that the planned paved and unpaved surfaces be specified in the building application, including the garage or carport. So if the budget for building the house is limited, the actual construction of the garden and terrace can only take place at a later time. The important thing is that the planning has already been done and is adapted to the house.

When planning your outdoor space, it’s important to develop an idea of what you want your future garden to look like. How would you like to use the garden? Does the family want to have breakfast in the morning sun or would they rather enjoy the sunset with a glass of wine on the terrace? Do children need space to play or does the garden need to attract attention with strong colors and elegant plants? How much time do you actually have available to take care of the garden?

The answers to all these questions should ideally be integrated into the design of the outdoor spaces and, for example regarding the location of the terrace, should also be taken into account in the design of the house. When you plan your dream house, your nearest construction partner will of course also include the outdoor structures that correspond to your ideas and wishes.

USE AND DESIGN THE SOIL

The garden acquires its first contours when the plan is drawn up. Natural soil conditions must be taken into account when planning. Be it the terrace on a stone-clad slope or its orientation towards the most beautiful view.

Have courage when designing your garden. When planting their yard, most builders stay too close to the property line and miss the opportunity to direct the viewer’s eye through the design elements. So anyone entering the property can see that the garden is either very narrow and long or very short and wide.

If you have a large garden, you need to distract yourself from the fact that it only has a shallow depth. The gaze must therefore be directed to the right and left to the sides. It works by highlighting the sides, for example with a seat, special plants or even a sculpture or fountain. The viewer’s attention is lost on the nearby garden border.

Long gardens look shorter if you can’t see straight out the back. Here the long tube should be designed with an S-shaped lawn that widens towards the back. You can visually enlarge a square garden by emphasizing the diagonals, for example by creating a terrace in the front right and placing an eye-catching group of plants in the back left.

THE PERFECT TERRACE

A welcoming garden includes a place to sit and relax after work. This is why the terrace cannot be missing when designing outdoor spaces. The terrace is the main place in most gardens and serves as a substitute living room in summer. The general rule for the terrace is: don’t design it too small. It should not only offer enough space for furniture, but also freedom of movement and space for additional guests. However, adequate sun protection is also important. If the terrace is expected to be covered, you will not have to worry about hot summer rain. The terrace can be visually expanded through a seamless transition to the lawn.

The terrace almost always connects directly to the house. The architectural style should therefore not differ too much from that of the house. Terracotta or clay-colored natural stones go well with a house with a Mediterranean hipped roof. The puristic Bauhaus style is supported by gray tiles or concrete blocks with clear lines. Wood lends itself to a rustic touch and underlines the character of a country house.

In terms of cost, natural stone is high quality, but expensive and time-consuming to lay. But natural stone lasts longer and rewards you with an elegant look. Concrete is versatile, durable and easy to maintain. Compared to natural stone, concrete blocks are significantly cheaper, even if some of them are no longer visually distinguishable. Wood is also more expensive than concrete blocks. Its advantage lies in the flexibility of the design. Experienced builders can build a wooden terrace themselves and even compensate for height differences between the house and the garden. The disadvantages of wood as a terrace covering are lower strength and shorter lifespan.

PLANTS AS DESIGN ELEMENTS

The use of hedges and plant dividers plays an important role in the garden. When you plan outdoor structures, you structure the property and create tension and atmosphere. High hedges provide privacy and protection from the wind. Flat fences allow for distant views.

When designing planting areas, you should pay attention to a consistent style. They can be rectangular or round in shape with plants with a strictly geometric shape. Solitary trees can be planted to attract attention. Particularly beautiful are the trees that offer a different picture in all four seasons. Plants in shades of white and blue at the rear of the property add depth to the garden.
