Aleppo soap: how to recognize it? How is it made?

Today I present to you the oldest soap in the world. Original, vegan, handmade Aleppo soap, actually made in Syria, is no longer so easy to find. Soaps with this name are often produced in Türkiye or Tunisia, which has nothing to do with the original. The recipes for its production are handed down from generation to generation and are kept like a secret!

How is Aleppo soap used?

Soap just for washing hands? Yes, it works, but in this case it’s a real waste because you can wash it completely. Both the body, face and hair can be washed with Aleppo soap. However, people who have previously used a silicone shampoo may notice that their hair is slightly greasy or stringy the first time they use it. This is because silicone residues are removed, which is very good for our hair. But this change takes time. I haven’t used a shampoo with silicones in years, so I didn’t notice the change in my hair in this area when I switched to Aleppo soap. But what I’ve noticed is that I have much more volume and my hair is much, much softer than with conventional shampoo. I have to say that my hair is extremely fine and very flat. I don’t use any styling products because I want to live as naturally as possible. But since using Aleppo soap, I have found that my hair has become thicker and overall better looking. But what’s even more remarkable is the effect on the skin on my face. I’ve always had somewhat impure skin and since I’ve been using it the small pimples have decreased significantly.

Aleppo soap – not always from Aleppo

However, the soap that needs to be produced in war zones and difficult political conditions does not always come from Aleppo. In fact, there are soap factories outside Aleppo and even outside Syria that produce this type of soap. It is important to pay attention to the recipe and ingredients, as well as the exact denomination of origin.

The soap from “Grüne Valerie Naturkosmetik” has been matured for over six years and is of the highest quality I have seen so far. The main ingredients are olive oil, bay oil and lye in different concentrations. Bay leaf has an antibacterial effect and can be very useful in cases of acne, skin eczema and dry skin. The higher the percentage of bay leaves, the more hydrating and moisturizing the soap. It definitely comes from Aleppo and is therefore a real Aleppo soap.

What are the benefits of Aleppo soap?

First of all, cosmetic products often contain microplastics and are full of chemicals that should not be on the skin. My rule is always: nothing on the skin that you couldn’t eat. The soap is natural and above all not expensive, considering how many cosmetic products you have in the bathroom, all of which can be replaced by this soap. Of course the price is significantly higher than that of a conventional shampoo or soap, but it is really worth it. One soap lasts about six months! Crazy right?

It’s also great for the environment because all materials are biodegradable. It is particularly suitable for allergy sufferers. Also, body lotion is no longer needed afterward, as the oil is very greasy. A little curiosity: you can also use it as a moth repellent if you break a piece and put it in the wardrobe. The smell seems to be very effective here.

Many people don’t find the smell very pleasant. At first I also thought I might have a problem with this. But after that you don’t feel anything anymore and you get used to the smell very quickly. Now I even find it fragrant and very natural. It doesn’t smell earthy but it doesn’t smell like perfume either.

Here I link the Aleppo soaps that I use and that you can order on Amazon:

There is also a premium version specific for hair and is composed of: sesame oil, black sesame oil, bay oil, castor oil, almond oil and cactus oil. This combination strengthens the hair roots and nourishes the scalp, actively preventing hair loss. You can also buy this soap here on Amazon.
