The coronavirus pandemic has led to drastic changes in our society and our world of work. Fortunately, many things are or have been temporary, some will remain permanent. So working from home, which was rather an exception before the crisis, is now on everyone’s lips. Therefore, everyone who is interested in the topic of building a house and can still make changes should adjust their plans in this regard. Below we show what is important when working from home:
GOOD REASONS FOR A HOME OFFICE

Not only for Corona, the office within one’s own four walls was a real enrichment. Working from home eliminates the need to commute to work and potentially eliminates the need for a second car for the family. This not only saves money, but also helps the climate.
Furthermore, working from home allows for greater flexibility when it comes to caring for children and, for example, allows you to take care of family members in need of care. When minor children aren’t romping around the room, your home office is much more of a place of peace and concentration than your workplace in an open-plan office, where the phone is constantly ringing and colleagues are talking.
The disadvantage of the isolation of the home office is the lack of social contacts, which are also part of working life and cannot be compensated for by telephone conversations and video conferences alone. In the long term this speaks of a smart mix of home office and company days.
However, if you only have to travel to your employer one or at most two days a week, you can also accept a longer journey. This makes areas further from the city attractive, where land is cheaper and children have more space to play outdoors.
MULTIFUNCTIONAL HOME OFFICE DESIGN
The design of a home office cannot be compared to the design of an open plan office or a conference center. However, there are still some things to consider when planning. The first step is to consider where the studio should be located. Is there a separate room or does the home office have to be integrated into another lounge for space reasons? In this case at least a visual delimitation is highly recommended.
If you regularly receive clients or colleagues within your four walls, the studio should be located on the ground floor if possible and possibly have an independent entrance. Here too, proximity to the guest toilet is important, because it is not necessary to send work guests to the family bathroom. If no business visits are planned, the upper floor or attic is a better choice for a home office because it naturally offers more peace and quiet than the busier ground floor.
In a single-family home, it is a good idea to be able to use the home office not only for work, but also for other purposes. A good example is the further use of the study as a guest room or as a hobby area. However, the office and ironing room can also be located in the same room.
When planning your home office, think about the soundproofing needed. Both loud phone calls or video conferences in the office and any noise from children in the rest of the house should be acoustically separated from each other. Therefore, office walls should be made of solid stone and not drywall or wood stud construction. These are too noisy and therefore less suitable for undisturbed and quiet work.
HOME OFFICE EQUIPMENT
For optimal work in the home office, good visibility at the workplace is essential. On the one hand, the home office should have enough natural light. For this purpose, floor-to-ceiling windows or balcony or terrace doors with direct access to the outside are suitable.
On the other hand, the workstation itself is ideally aligned so that daylight falls on the desk from the side. Sun protection and the path of the sun during the day should also be taken into consideration. There is nothing more annoying than being blinded directly by the sun and no longer being able to read your computer screen. But you should also avoid reflecting the sun onto the screen if possible. If you are working with sensitive data, the screen should not be visible from the outside.
For the right lighting, in addition to natural light, you certainly need a ceiling lamp that illuminates the workstation as uniformly as possible. It is advisable to avoid bright lights. It is best to use warm white light as it is very similar to natural light. An additional desk lamp is perfect for comfortable reading.
When designing your home you should think about the necessary multimedia connections and sufficient sockets with good separate protection. Their location must be determined based on the planned working location. This way you will avoid bulky extension cables.
Even in your home office, there should be enough space to store files and other documents. Studying should also offer the opportunity to get up every now and then and take a few steps.
