Furnish the house with a holiday atmosphere – How to do it

Not going this year? Would you like to have a holiday atmosphere in your home? I can’t predict summer weather. But I have a recipe you can use to create a casual Mediterranean vacation feel in your home. With natural materials, woven furniture and printed cushion covers you will quickly bring the Ibiza flair and holiday atmosphere to your terraceThe most important thing in short

3 essential elements to feel at home on holiday

Rely on real materials: Rattan, bamboo and natural wood not only give you the look but also the relaxed feel of your favorite vacation spot. These materials are pleasant to the touch and develop a patina. They are sturdy, easy to clean and make any indoor or outdoor space your favorite place.

Create the right atmosphere: Combine light natural tones such as tinted white with contrasts in black or warm earth tones. Complete with handcrafted details: ceramic vases, linen tablecloths and woven baskets. These details ensure an effortless Mediterranean feel and an elegant overall look, perfect for your «home on holiday» look.

Plan thoughtful basics and seasonal updates: Invest in durable, timeless furniture and top it off with new pillows, tablecloths or lanterns from time to time. This way you can stay creative and keep your interior vibrant without going over your budget. And don’t forget the light: lanterns and lanterns are a must for atmosphere on warm summer nights.

1. The new gratitude for every place you have outdoors

Memories: Corona has made us more grateful for every outdoor space that belongs to our apartment. It doesn’t matter how big or small. The main thing: your own piece of outdoor space with a clear view of the cloudless sky. Maybe you just have a stool there and a pot with a tomato plant that you’re watching grow? Maybe you even have a larger terrace and lots of space. No matter how big it is, you are certainly happy with your outdoor space, which had a meteoric rise during the pandemic – because it was irreplaceable, sought after and, sadly, envied. Because not everyone has a balcony or terrace.

You love your outdoor space. There you can immerse yourself in exciting novels for hours. Sometimes you work there too – your home office is flexible. Then we move from outside to inside, from the outdoor desk to the coffee machine and back. Maybe in the evening you drink wine there with your family or talk across the balconies with the friendly neighbor who always has enough onions and salt in the house for you?

I don’t know if you will go to Italy again this summer. But I have a recipe to get you in the holiday mood at home.
The ingredients are very simple because:

  • Made of real material
  • harvested by hand and
  • worked by hand

Just like one of the many delicious Italian dishes made up of a few but precious ingredients:

  • Handmade durum wheat pasta
  • Sun-ripened tomatoes
  • Oil from hand-picked olives
  • Sun-dried Mediterranean salt
  • Juice of one of over 100 varieties of Sicilian lemons
  • Real raw milk Parmesan
  • Italian wine – oh, you’re already drinking it…

2. Because furniture and other furnishing accessories made with natural materials are good for you

Let’s be honest. Do you feel relaxed when you see the widespread steel outdoor furniture, whose parts are held together at right angles and risk causing bruises? Just looking at it gives me bruises and the feeling of a waiting room and a car dealership. No holiday feeling. I want to run away from that instead of staying.

If you’ve been reading here for a while, you know I always emphasize, how important natural materials are. Real materials, such as rattan and bamboo, are honest. Especially when the summer sun is shining. There is no suspicious artificial sheen like “wood-look plastic” flooring. Even your feet notice it when you walk barefoot. Lovers of real materials also appreciate when they change over the years and gradually show signs of wear.

We are part of nature, but we have made sure that we live in a high-tech environment. At least most of the time. Natural environments, such as offices and apartments designed with natural materials, are the future.

On the one hand because they can arouse positive emotions when touched (unlike plastic, steel and concrete). On the other hand, because the use of renewable raw materials is becoming increasingly important. Of course this also includes rattan and bamboo.

Two rattan chairs in front of a historic brick facade and quarried stonework of a renovated finca.

3. Bamboo and rattan – natural materials for a holiday atmosphere at home on the balcony and terrace

What do you associate with your favorite vacation spot? This certainly ranges from deck chairs to simple teak wood furniture to airy and light furniture made from woven materials. You’re knocking on my open doors. Woven materials and natural woods are simply the wild cards Guaranteed summer feeling at home.

Hardly any other material is as light and at the same time as robust and easy to clean as rattan or bamboo. The prejudices of the hippies of the 70s have long been overcome: rattan and bamboo are available in a wide selection in simple and delicate designs. Ideal for the holiday atmosphere at home.

For natural materials and their textured surfaces to appear contemporary, they need an environment that ideally reflects natural tones. Strident colors, on the other hand, would disturb the calming character. A colorful white and a deep black, on the other hand, ensure good contrast.

I didn’t have to do much research to show you examples of how to design relaxing indoor and outdoor spaces because, as often happens, I found what I was looking for with my friend Tine Kjeldsen. A topic that interests most of my interior design clients.

Your summer collections are sensual and guarantee a holiday feeling just by looking at them. And even better: they are suitable for indoor and outdoor use.

It also shows what other materials you can combine rattan etc with. to ensure maximum holiday atmosphere:

  • natural wood
  • hand-painted ceramics
  • natural colored linen table linen
  • hand-woven cotton rugs
  • handcrafted glass vases in the colors of the sunset

Further details if you want to furnish yourself in a Mediterranean style: handmade and painted plates, coarsely woven natural linen cushions and simple bamboo furniture

Simple and timeless basic elements. Whether Asian, North African or Scandinavian inspired – they all have the potential to become classics. They are available for many years, a piece of sustainability in a short time.

Tine Kjeldsen is as real as her label. Fashion, trends, always reinventing the wheel? She rejects him. Instead, she loves consistency and friendship, which makes her a reliable friend, even for her interior design clients.

4. What you need for the Mediterranean lifestyle: basics and seasonal updates

Here’s how:

Last but not least:

Don’t forget the light. Because it only becomes round with atmospheric lighting. Ideal, of course, with handmade lanterns and lantern glasses.

A lantern doesn’t make a summer, but a summer without a lantern? It’s nothing.

Have fun and happy holidays!
