In summer there is nothing more annoying than mosquitoes, but there are natural remedies that mosquitoes can’t stand. Lemongrass in particular is one of the plants capable of effectively keeping mosquitoes away. More specifically, you need lemongrass oil, also called citronella oil, but lemons themselves can also be helpful. Today we will explain how to make a DIY mosquito repellent.
Keep mosquitoes away in the rooms or on the terrace
We recommend setting up a scented lamp in your house or on the terrace on a cozy summer evening and adding 5-6 drops of lemongrass oil there. This smells very pleasant to us humans and keeps mosquitoes away. However, citronella oil is highly volatile and does not provide a permanent mosquito repellent. After approximately 1-2 hours you should replace the evaporating fluid. What also helps, of course, are mosquito nets. Adhesive window grills can be purchased for a few euros.
Keep mosquitoes away from your body
Some recommend scrubbing with lemongrass oil as well. Since it is an essential oil, it is not recommended, especially for children. This can cause skin irritation. It is best to mix lemongrass oil with a carrier oil. We successfully use the following recipe:
Mix both with a wooden stick in a spray bottle and spray it on your skin. It is important that the coconut oil is liquid. You can already buy liquid coconut oil. At solid temperatures it works only from 23-24 degrees. This mixture has a very pleasant smell and is not irritating to the skin. On the contrary: coconut oil is very good for the skin.
What other tips are there against mosquitoes?
First of all, it is important to «smell» as little as possible. This means that showering is essential if you want to keep mosquitoes away. It is also not recommended to wear perfume or artificial fragrances on your body. If you know you’re going to an area where lots of mosquitoes are expected, it’s also worth wearing long clothes to cover as many parts of your body as possible. We have also had good experiences with tea tree oil or lavender oil. However, they do not work as well as lemongrass oil. It is also recommended to plant lemongrass in the garden. It is best to plant it in pots in places where you spend the most time. The pots can then be moved if necessary.

Another home remedy is to use tomato leaves as an alternative to mosquitoes during tomato season. You can do it in the post “Tomato leaves against mosquitoes? Here’s how the home remedy works» read it. But it doesn’t make much sense to put fresh tomatoes on the table. Just remove a few leaves or stems, perhaps grate them lightly and spread them on the garden or terrace table.
Lemon with cloves against mosquitoes
An old home remedy is lemon with cloves. Here you need a lemon, which is cut into halves or quarters, and cloves, which you stick all over the lemon. This can then be placed on a saucer on the windowsill or placed next to a door. I wouldn’t hang it because the lemon juice could drip onto the floor and leave unsightly stains. After about a month you need to renew the lemon.
What to do if the mosquito bites?
Then there’s a super simple and cheap trick. All you need is some commercially available baking soda in your purse. This is moistened with water in the palm of the hand to create a paste, which then simply needs to be applied to the spot. You can find all the information about it in the article “Baking soda – Natural home remedy for mosquito bites“This can also happen in nature Spring sauerkrautwhich is relatively unpopular and grows along streams in many places, can be used.
Plantain plantain – the wild herb against mosquito bites
If you are looking for a quick and simple remedy from nature, plantar plantain is still the simplest and absolutely free remedy of choice, which has proven itself over the centuries and is also used externally almost weekly. Plantain can be picked from the lawn or path edge, rubbed lightly between the fingers so that some of the sap comes out, and then placed on the stinger or wrapped around it. You can also prepare an excellent ointment with plantain which you can also apply on the sting. It should not be missing in any medicine cabinet at home. The recipe for the ointment can be found here in the article “Plantain plantain helps against insect bites: prepare an ointment and cough syrup«By the way, are you already familiar with our herb cellar YouTube channel?
