This is how you get this magnificent perennial safely through fall and winter

If inside October When the last flowers fade, the sedum (Sedum spectabile) shows its most beautiful side once again: with bright pink umbels that give structure to the garden even after the first frost. But now is the right time to prepare them for the winter. Cut, share or do you prefer to leave it alone? Here you can find out how to optimally care for your sedum so that it starts next year healthy and strong and why you shouldn’t cut it back too early.

Why is the October cure so important?

At the end of autumn nature prepares for the next winter rest and even the sedum retreats. Good care this month ensures that the plant comes into winter stronger and shines again in all its glory in spring.

Characteristics of the magnificent borracina

The Magnificent Fetthenne It is a hardy perennial that impresses with its fleshy leaves and magnificent umbel-shaped flowers. It is easy to care for, drought tolerant and is a magnet for bees and butterflies. In autumn it slowly retreats and stores its energy in the roots and then sprouts again in spring.

Properly cut sedum in autumn

It is absolutely not necessary to cut the sedum at the end of October. Many hobby gardeners abandon wilted stands because they look decorative and offer protection from frost. If you still want to cut the plant, proceed as follows:

  • Remove wilted flowers: Cut the flower heads just above the ground.
  • Remove diseased or dead leaves: This will prevent the spread of diseases and pests.

Tip: Use sharp, clean scissors to avoid injury to the plant.

  • Mulch layer: A layer of bark or leaf mulch protects the roots from hard frost.
  • Cover: In very cold regions, garden fleece or pine branches can be used.

Fertilization: pause until spring

  2. Divided: Use a sharp knife to divide the root ball into several pieces.
  3. Plantation: Place the new pieces in fresh soil and water them lightly.

Tip: Make sure you plant your new plants on a frost-free day.

Rustic species

Common sedum species such as A watchable place (Magnificent borracine), I sat down at the phone (purple sedum) or Sedum acre (stone) are frost resistant and can survive temperatures well below -20 °C. Caution is only necessary with young plants and when sedum, such as the magnificent sedum, grows in pots. Potted plants are more sensitive to frost because their roots are less well insulated.
