If a swarm of bees has chosen your garden as a temporary or permanent location, you will probably be very surprised and perhaps a little panicked at first. But don’t panic: with our advice you will find out what to do, because a swarm of bees has arrived at us and we have documented the procedure for you.
Why do swarms of bees end up in the garden?
When a new queen is born in a swarm of bees, both queens cannot remain in the hive. So the swarm must split. The old queen then leaves the hive and flies away with some members of her colony to search for a new place. This is precisely what happens more and more between April and July and so, especially in the summer months, an uninvited swarm of bees can come to rest in the garden and cause fear and terror.

Is a swarm of bees dangerous?
Of course, if you get too close to the swarm, the bees may sting, scare them, or try to leave on their own. You should maintain sufficient distance and only observe from afar. There is no point in calling the fire department, you simply need to do nothing and wait for the swarm to fly away on its own, or call a local beekeeper who will have more information or even be able to collect the swarm.
How to remove the swarm from the garden?
If you don’t want to keep the swarm in your garden, the beekeeper can capture them and take them with you. Unfortunately, honey bees are no longer able to survive on their own in nature because they are seriously threatened by enemies such as the Varroa mite, which is why it is better for the bees to be able to move to a new hive provided by a beekeeper. Even legally the question is clear. The swarm of bees belongs to whoever finds them first (see § 961 – 962 BGB), unless they have escaped from a beekeeper who is already looking for them. If the swarm needs to leave the garden, the beekeeper usually brings a box with a hole or a so-called hive or hive. Our swarm of bees was collected by the local beekeeper after a few hours. If the queen enters the box, the rest automatically follow.
Our commitment to bees
We have been committed to bees and other insects for a long time, as we have been creating flower meadows on agricultural land for four years. This year we have made seven hectares available to bees. You can find all the information in this article and in our video documenting our work. Species extinction affects us all. That’s why we need to actively do something about bees and insects.
