Drinking water without electricity? This is how rainwater is made drinkable

Drinking water is something we take for granted, which is why we don’t even think about it when we turn on the tap. The theory goes that our drinking water in Germany is safe to drink. However, more and more people are thinking about installing a water filter in their kitchen. The path of water from the aqueduct to the domestic system is not always harmless. Who knows exactly which path the water takes?

Water treatment problems can occur not only in aqueducts. Our drinking water is transported to us many kilometers through pipes. The quality of these pipes can vary: old pipes may be defective or contaminants may find their way into the pipes from construction sites. Especially in old buildings, water flows through old, perhaps rusty, iron pipes. Not to mention the microplastics in our water infrastructure. Basic tap water treatment always reaches its limits when it comes to removing pesticides, hormones and medications from water. This is why it is important to be able to filter water where it comes to us: at home, from the tap. For this reason more and more people decide to install a simple clip filter or even a larger system.

Why do we need electricity for our drinking water?

Of course, there are simple filter systems, for example for the kitchen, which are connected to the tap and therefore do not primarily require electricity for their water treatment function. But water itself requires electricity. Again not directly at the home tap, but indirectly, for example through pumps or water lifting systems inside and outside the home. So if the power goes out due to a storm, damage to the power line, construction work or simply other circumstances, it is only a matter of time how long the drinking water already present in the domestic circuit can be used before it runs out and refilling can no longer take place due to the power cut.

Where does drinking water come from during a power outage?

So, if the electricity goes out for a long period of time and the water in the domestic circuit runs out, the following challenge arises: How can I get drinking water outside my house or apartment? Probably not everyone has a source of natural, drinkable fresh water nearby that could easily solve this problem. If you have a garden, you may have a cistern or rain barrel for irrigation, or perhaps even a manually operated fountain. But do you really want and need to drink this water, which perhaps has been stale for a long time and therefore contaminated, untreated? NO! The solution in this case would be an easy-to-use and portable filtration system that works without electricity. You should also have the ability to filter the volume to provide more people with treated drinking water.

The solution: the Urquelle® outdoor station

When we were looking for a backup solution for our drinking water supply, we turned to the Urquelle team® Outdoor took notice of us and kindly provided us with their self-sustaining water filtration system, the Urquelle® External station, supplied. We would like to introduce it to you today. Advertising.

The water filtration system is Here Available in two versions: installed in a very robust hard case with wheels, protected from dust and water or integrated into a backpack. The first is recommended for stationary use, the second if you are on foot for multi-day excursions. First of all, there is always the possibility of not using the system until an «emergency event» occurs. Thanks to the available tap adapter, it is possible to use the filter system directly in the kitchen as a «classic» filter.

How does the water filter system work?

The use of the original source® Outdoor Station is very simple and requires no technical knowledge. When in use, simply place the included hose into a water source. It could be used, for example, in these areas:

  • Rainwater (tons)
  • Ponds
  • Rivers
  • View
  • pond

Using a hand pump, up to 1.5 liters of water per minute can flow through the filter system and at the other end be used as drinking water. The system has three filters through which water is pumped. The first filter is a sediment filter which acts as a pre-filter. Removes coarse and fine dirt from the water. The water then passes to the ultrafiltration anti-germ barrier. There viruses, bacteria and germs as well as suspended particles are removed from future drinking water. Particles cannot pass through the 0.01 micron UF membrane, so only fresh water and dissolved minerals pass through.

The third member of the group is the activated carbon block filter from Carbonit. This removes chemicals, drug residues, asbestos fibers, pesticides and many other suspended particles. The sediment filter can be washed after use. The filter is replaced after approx. 10,000 liters of water. In summary, this 3-stage system filters the following contaminants:

  • coarse particles
  • fine particles
  • organic substances
  • inorganic substances
  • Microplastics
  • Drug residues
  • Light metals
  • Heavy metals
  • Chemicals and pesticides
  • Germs, bacteria, viruses, parasites (0.01μ micron)

Not only filters, but also revitalizes

Fresh spring water not only has the property of being almost free of harmful substances, but also its crystalline structure is arranged hexagonal and has a natural energy spectrum. This is not the case with stale water, such as from a barrel or pond. So it comes in the original source® The revitalizing cartridge is also used in the external station after filtering. Thanks to a selected mineral mixture consisting of amethyst, rock crystal, rose quartz, precious schungite, as well as EM ceramic and Maifan volcanic rock, the water receives the «fine touch» after filtering and regains its hexagonal crystalline structure. Optionally, a UMH energization module can be installed in the filter circuit. You can find more information about UMH energization here on the information page from the original source® Outdoor.
